The other day a CCTV prospect told me that it was like jinx. Last time when she wanted to put up a burglar alarm system, the house was burglarized a week before the alarm system was deployed. Now she plans to put up a CCTV system, again her house was broken into.
I suppose she is somehow has this foresight, oracle kind of ability to predict the oncoming misfortune.
To me she is like Paul, the psychic octopus that has a 100% prediction success rate for Germany's World Cup games. Here is his final show of mojo for the German team in this 2010 FIFA World Cup.
I wonder if those predictions were self-fulfilling prophecies.

CCTV Addiction
A customer with a few CCTV deployments at most of his restaurants told me laughingly that he might be addicted to CCTV viewing.
He told me that he'd acquired the habit of constantly looking at the CCTV live videos streaming from his various restaurants via internet. CCTV viewing is the first thing he does in the morning and the last thing to do before he goes to bed.
Well, men (and women) can be addicted to and obsessed with anything and everything, alcohol, cigarette, drug, food, pet, TV, World Cup, gambling, stock market, money, their job, idols, God, women or men (men or women) and... marble.

When the Going Gets Tough...
Here is a little something to share and to cheer up all CCTV installers out there.
Commuters ride a makeshift trolley (taxi) on a railway in Manila, Philippine.
A ride will cost 6-10 pesos (USD 0.12 - 0.21).
The taxi is made from bamboo and wood. The only trick is to quickly take it off the tracks when a train is approaching.

Big and Obvious CCTV Camera
This is a followup to my previous Clarity is Everything posting.
Some installers said, the robber might not climbed over the gate if the CCTV camera is big and obvious enough.
I dunno if the robber will even notice a pink cow in the house compound with his overdosed adrenaline in his blood stream but for sure chances are better than noticing a black cat.
Anyhow those installers are right. Rule of thumb of CCTV deployment, an outdoor CCTV camera the bigger, the more obvious the better.

Pirated PCI DVR Trade-in
The other day a lady came to our CCTV outlet to get a basic stand alone DVR for her house in Damansara.
After hours of painstakingly bargaining, we had finally agreed on the price.
While we are installing a hard disk to her DVR, we are in for a big surprise, she pulled an old PCI DVR card out from her over-sized designer bag and demanded to trade in the "expensive and still in working condition" card.
We kindly declined her proposal as we do not purchase used gear (especially PCI DVR card with pirated recording software) nor do trade-in.
To us an "expensive" pirated PCI DVR card is only good for slicing bread.

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) launched the highly anticipated next-generation high-speed broadband (HSBB) service, UniFi yesterday.
The UniFi packages comprise triple-play services of high-speed Internet, video (IPTV) and phone, with speeds of 5Mbps, 10Mbps and 20Mbps.
Residential Packages are priced at RM149/month (5Mbps), RM199/month (10Mbps) and RM249/Month (20Mbps)
Business Packages are priced at RM199/month (5Mbps), RM599/month (10Mbps) and RM899/Month (20Mbps)
Lets keep our fingers crossed, this service might cause a baby boom in our surveillance industry as naked broadband speed is everything for CCTV's long distance monitoring & viewing.
Initially this high speed broadband service is available at Bangsar, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Shah Alam and Subang Jaya.

Kopi Luwak
Last weekend, I went to an Indonesian Teak wood furniture shop in Sri Hartamas.
After a little chat with the owner of the shop, he asked if I am interested to bring my CCTV business to Java, Indonesia. With 130 million inhabitants, Java is the most populous island in Indonesia. He said with the rising concerns for safety and security, the surveillance CCTV market has been witnessing exponential growth for past few years.
He told me, as a trader he is constantly looking for business opportunities. He said he is trying to bring Kopi Luwak from Indonesia to Malaysia.
Kopi Luwak is the world most expensive coffee beans. The bean goes from the coffee tree through the digestive system of the palm civet and then to the roaster.
You have read correctly, Kopi Luwak is cat poo coffee!

Easy or Difficult
A prospect asked us to quote him a 4 camera points cctv solution for his furniture outlet.
We told him without site visit we could only quote him the cctv gear but not the deployment workmanship cost. He was furious, he said it is merely a very simple 4 channel solution and insisted that we must furnish him with a full solution quotation on the same day.
Well, a "simple" 4 channel cctv deployment can be as easy as;

Did we quote him on that day? Of cause not.

Tout Jour Prest
Last Saturday morning a CCTV installer came to pick up some gear from us.
He looked sick and tired.
He said his customer called him at 11PM to tell him that his whole cctv system was down. The installer and his team had worked through the night to revive sections of the system.
Like it or not, in our CCTV business, we have to be 'Tout Jour Prest' - always ready.

Jimmy Choo's Sandals?
The other day a rather well-dressed affluence looking lady came to our CCTV outlet to claim warranty for her CCTV cameras.
Our technician advised her that those cameras were not from us.
She could not produce the invoice but insisted that those cameras were from us.
I approached her, picked up one of her cameras, looked for our warranty sticker on the camera which I had found none.
I kindly told her, "Ma'am, we can tell if a sandals was Jimmy Choos."
I must admit I was rude. Guilty as charged.

Cloud Computing CCTV
In my 2008 posting, cloud 9, I did talk about cloud computing and its effects on CCTV.
Last evening, I went home earlier than usual and managed to catch a Taiwanese news talk show. The TV program featured the importance of Cloud Computing and it says the Taiwanese and the Chinese governments and corporates are working together ferociously to come out with their own Cloud Computing technology. With this collaboration, the two governments determine to break the monopolistic of the 5 major US Cloud Computing players namely Google, Apple, Microsoft, Cisco & Amazon.
This morning before I came to work, Martin Soong on CNBC was interviewing two corporate leaders about Cloud Computing again!
Wonder if this is a mere coincidence or Cloud Computing has finally arrived in a big way.
For the sake of argument, what if Google starts offering Cloud CCTV solution with video footage storage at their cloud server at a minuscule monthly fee?
Is our CCTV industry ready for this inevitable revolution?

Children Drawing
The other day a family came to our CCTV outlet to get a surveillance system from us.
After they left, I picked up a flyer from the floor. To my surprise, it was a children drawing at the back of the flyer. It must be from the quiet little girl who's sitting at one corner of our shop for the past one and a half hours.
So people said they hate "High Tech" job because there is no "High Touch" elements in "High Tech" line. Today I proof them wrong.
It is amazing what a children drawing can do to us.
When you look at the drawing, it can calm you down, and if you look at it long enough, the drawing actually makes you laugh.
I especially like the joker face rabbit. The rabbit even has a scar across its face.

Stinky Armpits Sniffing
A CCTV installer complained to us that he does not have a life.
He said his CCTV customers call him when their CCTV systems are down and out even in the middle of the night and during public holidays.
Well, like it or not, that is part and parcel of a CCTV installer life, at least we don't have to sniff sweaty stinky armpits.

Seesaw
Ever played a seesaw before? I bet you did.
It won't stays down all the time, unless you allow yourself to stay there. In other words it is your choice to stay down.
I remember no matter how many times it went down, I did my very best to push myself up again, ...again, again and yet again.
To all my fellow CCTV industry's friends please keep your chin up, if you choose to push hard enough, am very certain your side of the seesaw will soon rise again.
Oh yes, it was me and my sister on that seesaw at Genting Highland. The colour of the photo might be fading but I still remember vividly her bright red shoes and pants, wonder if she still keeps them.

Last year a CCTV installer had started importing CCTV gear after visiting a Security Trade Show.
He told me that he managed to identify an OEM manufacturer who can produce a full range of very cheap CCTV product.
He said trading is all about brand building and advertisement, once customer recognizes his CCTV brand via advertisement, his CCTV gear will capture a lion share in the Malaysian CCTV market.
Last week, he called and tried to sell me his entire CCTV stock as he is no longer keen in the business.
The truth is, what is wrong or bad (low quality) can not be made right (good quality) by advertisement.
It is like publishing a lie and expecting people to believe.
